Reviewer: Review from Motor Guide East, December 20th 2007 from UK The launch of the iconic Volkswagen Camper van 60 years ago has just been marked in two ways, first by a rally in Germany and secondly with the launch of a new book that is a must read for anyone interested in the evergreen Camper.
The rally was held at Hanover when 71,000 visitors drooled over an amazing selection of over 5000 VW Transporter vans and campers, from the original split screen T1 to today's fifth generation models.
It is doubtful if any other vehicle has attracted so much attention and early examples of the Camper can still be seen in the UK and abroad.
In fact I spotted one in an hotel car park in central France last year which was one of the early split windscreen models that was rather bizarrely painted with an army type camouflage colour and towing two motorcycles on a trailer. Now, a new book has just been published which contains an abundance of photographs, original marketing and details about the vehicle.
It is the aptly titled 'Volkswagen Camper' by Richard Copping from Veloce Publishing and costing £24.99 which will make an ideal gift for Christmas or any time of the year for lovers of this special and much loved marque.
The 176 page book has 340 fascinating images about the Camper phenomenon which includes sales literature about the various models and conversions. It includes unusual discontinued models and it will fascinate and entertain every VW fanatic like never before.
The book shows why the Camper with its numerous conversions became so popular, especially in its early years, for it provided a way to spend time in the great outdoors. It offered freedom and flexibility for those owners and their families wanting something different from hotels and caravans for spending their leisure time.
