TODMORDEN BUSES - A CENTURY OF SERVICE (Fare Stage Series FS05)

TODMORDEN BUSES - A CENTURY OF SERVICE (Fare Stage Series FS05)

The Pennine borough of Todmorden was one of the few municipalities in the North of England never to have had a passenger tramway system. Delays in the implementation of the Todmorden Corporation Tramways Order of 1902, allowed development of the internal combustion engine to advance to such a point that the motor bus became a competitor worthy of serious consideration. Thus the borough became only the second in England to run buses, the services commencing on 1st January 1907. Numerous teething problems almost caused the abandonment of motor buses and at one point their replacement by trolley buses was considered. In 1931, the Corporation sold half its share of the bus undertaking to the LMS Railway; thus the Todmorden Joint Omnibus Committee, noted for its all-Leyland fleet, came into being. Ralph Wilkinson, a native of Todmorden now living in Cumbria, has written this spirited account of Todmorden's buses over the past 100 years following painstaking examination of original records. The story is set against the economic and social background of the town and is brought to life by the authors personal memories coupled with extensive forays into his collection of photographs, models, tickets and other ephemera.
