The latest addition to Midland's Irish railway list is a celebration of the country's most renowned narrow gauge railway system, the County Donegal Railway. Though the CDR closed in 1959, the memory of its red steam locomotives and red and cream railcars and carriages is still held in great affection by railway enthusiasts. The many CDR artefacts which have been preserved and the work of several societies to restore parts of the system have introduced the railway to many too young to have experienced ot for themselves and railway modellers have produced a number of splendid layouts based on the CDR, which are often seen at model railway exhibitions.
The CDR Companion is a wonderful miscellany of history, photographs, drawings and memories of the railway and the remote and beautiful country it served. The book recounts the history of the system and then looks at some of the CDR's rolling stock in detail using photographs and scale drawings of locomotives, railcars, wagons and carriages. There are views of the stations and even a guide to what remains of the system for today's visitors to County Donegal.
