Targa Florio - The Legendary Targa Florio - A 20th Century Epic

The legendary Targa Florio was one of the most celebrated races in motor racing history. The joy of this Sicilian road race, second only to the mythical Mille Miglia, began in 1906 at the dawn of motoring civilisation and it evolved over the years, hand in hand with the ever-growing popularity of the car itself. The narrow and tortuous roads of the Madonie mountains were testimony to the feats the manufacturers who conquered a race of rich allure and ever-present peril. However, in May 1977, after 71 glorious years, the Targa Florio ceased to exist, because this last running of the race was marred by several serious accidents. As with the Mille Miglia 20 years earlier, another heroic phase of road racing was lost forever.
