STREETS OF SUSSEX

STREETS OF SUSSEX

Stretching from Chichester and Midhurst in the west to Rye and Winchelsea in the east, Sussex is a county of great contrasts. In terms of public transport, the area was also rich in variety, with two municipal operators, one of which, Eastbourne, was the first municipal operator of buses in the early years of the twentieth century. Trams and trolleybuses were to be found in operation in Brighton, Hove and Hastings. Much of the rural bus service was provided by Southdown, but the north of the county was penetrated by the Country Area services of London Transport, later London Country. Covering the major seaside resorts and the country towns and villages, the book portrays buses and trolleybuses seen in service from the mid-1950s through to the early 1970s in the environment in which they were at work. One of the strengths of this series is its focus upon the changing environment in which public transport has operated over the years. This portrays both continuity and change, which are emphasised through the authors’ selection of some 85-colour images of their home county. The ‘Streets of’ series has proved immensely popular with both enthusiasts, who find much of interest in the history of the area’s public transport, and those who live in the areas covered, who are able to look at the scenes featured with great nostalgia for the views and buildings that have long disappeared.
