SOUTHDOWN DAYS

SOUTHDOWN DAYS

Southdown, whose origins go back to 1915, dominated non-municipal operation in Hampshire, Sussex and West Kent and was later an important subsidiary of both BET and the National Bus Company. Its expansion during the interwar years, taking over numerous other operators, resulted in its green and white liveried vehicles becoming a ubiquitous sight on the roads of southern England. Today, the Southdown name is no more, lost amidst the dismemberment and privatisation of the NBC subsidiaries, but for enthusiasts it remains one of the most popular of all British bus and coach operators. This book examines Southdown operations in the 1950s and 60s and records the great variety of Southdown vehicles seen in this period. It also illustrates some of the other areas of transport interest that the enthusiast could witness by travelling over Southdown's extensive network.
