PROFILE OF THE SOUTHERN MOGULS

The LBSCR's `K' class of 1913 was the first 2-6-0 introduced by a constituent of what became the Southern Railway. On the SECR in 1917, Maunsell introduced the 'N' class Mogul and a 2-6-4T passenger tank. When the SR was created in 1923, he became its CME and his ex-SECR design became the basis of further 2-6-0 types, culminating in the `U' and `Ul' classes of 1931. Following the Sevenoaks accident in 1927, the ex-SECR 2-6-4Ts were rebuilt as 2-6-Os. Some 174 2-6-Os passed to BR in 1948, the last being withdrawn in 1966.This book offers a comprehensive selection of photos portraying these types from their earliest days through to the end of SR steam. Alongside the photos, the book also includes line drawings of each of the class, along with data on build dates, numbering and withdrawals. First published in 1985 and long unavailable, this new impression of a classic title will be much sought after by all those interested in the history of the SR.
