The historic main line between Potters Bar and Hitchin has seen many changes of traction, architecture and track layout. These are extensively illustrated and the lengthy quadrupling is featured. The quieter route to Cambridge retains some of its earlier charm and is shown in detail, along with a notable cement works railway.
