LONDON TRANSPORT IN THE 1960s

LONDON TRANSPORT IN THE 1960s

This book examines the development of London Transport during a period of transition. The start of the 1960s saw the end of trolleybus operations, whilst later in the decade the first wholly new Underground line for more than a generation, the Victoria Line, was opened. Moreover, this was the last decade when LT's responsibilities extended significantly beyond the Metropolis, as from 1 January 1970 the Country Area services and vehicles were transferred to the National Bus Company and recast as London Country. The last Routemasters were delivered in the late 1960s, with LT following the national trend towards the purchase of rear-engined double-deckers. These and many other momentous events are recorded in the author's entertaining and pertinent text and illustrated with some 175 mono photos that portray the great variety of scenes visible on London's roads and rails during this fascinating period.
