On 1 January 1970 the green ‘Country Area’ buses and services that had formed part of London Transport since the 1930s were hived off from LT to form a subsidiary of the then newly-created National Bus Company. Comprising both the Green Line express services plus the many services that comprised County Area operations outside the Metropolis, the new London Country Bus Services proved both to have a complex inception and a difficult initial period of operation.
As time progressed, London Country became well-established, providing services in many of the most important towns and cities in southern England. As with other NBC operators, deregulation and privatisation resulted in the company being split into smaller operational units, which were ultimately being sold off. Covering the history of the company from its creation through to its dismemberment in the mid-1980s, this book provides, for both the transport professional and the road transport enthusiast a comprehensive account of the strengths and weaknesses of one of the most important regional bus operators of the 1970s and 1980s.
