LOCOMOTIVES IN DETAIL 4: Maunsell 4-6-0 King Arthur Class

 This is the latest title in our new Locomotives in Detail series, which provides a comprehensive and detailed guide to specific locomotive classes for the Modeller and historian. Based around a design of 1918 for an express passenger class of 4-6-0s, later modified and improved by Maunsell, the King Arthur or ON15 class eventually totalled some 74 locomotives. Though the career of the class on both the Central and Eastern sections of the SR was curtailed by the SR’s policy of main-line electrification, the type continued to offer sterling service on the ex-LSWR main lines until the arrival of the Bulleid Pacifics.

Withdrawal of the class commenced in 1953, but it was not until 1962 that the final examples were scrapped. The latest title in this new series examines the careers of these popular SR locomotives. The book includes detailed 4mm scale drawings along with a comprehensive selection of both colour and mono photographs that illustrate the liveries carried by the locomotives during their careers and the differences that marked out each individual locomotive at particular dates.
