Having previously dealt with the routes of the LNWR and the Cheshire Lines, Bob Pixton now completes his Liverpool & Manchester trilogy with a pictorial survey of the remaining railway that joined the two great cities of the North West – the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway.

Despite being confined almost entirely within the two counties after which it was named, the railway operated one of the most intense services of any company at the time, connecting the mill towns of the red and white rose counties, and running large numbers of excursions to Lancashire’s coastal resorts.

Like its companion volumes, this book takes us on an imaginary journey between Liverpool and Manchester, station by station, along the original main line via Bolton and the later direct line via Atherton.Cut-offs and goods branches are also covered.The three volumes in the series combine to provide a unique and comprehensive study of the railways between these two conurbations, with a total of almost 700 photographs from the days of steam.
