This new two part series examines the operational history and markings of the Ju 87 Stuka, the name an abbreviation of the German word Sturzkampfflugzeug, meaning dive bomber. The fearsome sight and sound of the Ju 87 diving on its target, its siren wailing, heralded a new style of warfare known as blitzkrieg which led to German victories in Poland, Norway, the Low Countries, France, the Mediterranean and Russia between 1939 and 1943. This book covers the pre-war development of the Stuka concept and early dive bomber prototypes. The Stuka’s initial deployment, with the Nazi Legion Condor in the Spanish Civil War, is examined. The aircraft’s central role in the campaigns in Poland and Norway and in the blitzkrieg war in the West against the Low Countries and France is then explored. The operational history of the Stuka continues with the Channel Battles, the Battle of Britain and the attacks on Malta and Crete concluding with the opening phases of Operation Barbarossa, the war against Russia.
