DIESELS IN THE HIGHLANDS

Amongst the most scenic railway lines in Britain were those constructed by the Highland, North British and Caledonian railways to serve Kyle of Lochalsh, Mallaig and Oban respectively. Though they fell under threat of closure in the 1960s, all have survived into the 21st century, although the Oban route is now served via the West Highland line following the closure of part of the original Callander & Oban route.
Following dieselisation, these lines remained popular as a result of the distinctive diesel classes which operated on them. Today, even though locomotive hauled trains are a rarity and multiple units are used to provide passenger services, these routes both continue to attract enthusiasts and provide an essential link for many isolated communities.

The book examines the diesel classes, so long the mainstay of operations in this part of Scotland, the fondly remembered Class 26s and 27s. It then moves to the era when the routes were dominated by the Class 37s and brings the story right up to date with the views of later types such as the Class 66s and the various types of multiple units used on services in recent times. Drawing upon his own extensive collection as well as those of other noted photographers, the author has selected some 85 images, supplemented by detailed captions, to provide a vivid portrait of railway operation in this potentially harsh environment during all seasons of the year.
