DIESELS IN DEPTH : Class 40

This series will provide a comprehensive guide to the class featured, for both the modeller and those with a more general interest in the locos concerned. Nicknamed the ‘Whistlers’, the 200 members of the English Electric Class 40 were amongst the most distinctive of all the types to emerge from the Modernisation Plan of 1955. Designed initially for express passenger services, in 1958 the first of the class were allocated to the Eastern Region where they replaced steam on the London-Norwich main line. Subsequent deliveries saw their area of operation extend to the London Midland, North Eastern and Scottish regions and their range of activities broaden to include parcels and freight traffic. Though all had been withdrawn by 1988, a number survive in preservation. The book includes detailed 4mm scale drawings along with an excellent selection of colour and mono photos that illustrate the variety in the liveries carried by these machines during their careers and detail differences that marked out individual locomotives at particular times.
