BYGONE LONDON

BYGONE LONDON

Over the past 60 years the urban landscape of Britain’s major towns and cities has changed dramatically. Alongside large-scale urban redevelopment resulting in new office blocks and shopping centres, is a vast increase in street furniture and road signs, attempting to control the inexorable rise of the motorcar. In addition, the growth of retail chains whose shop fronts are deliberately made to look the same across the country has created less varied and more uniform streetscapes.

In 2001 the first title in what has become our ‘Streets of’ series was published Now reprinted three times, Streets of London combined views of urban transport subjects chosen because they also reflected the streetscapes of the era. Following the publication of the book, several new and unpublished collections of material became available, allowing the author to compile a further selection of historic colour recording London in the years between the end of World War 2 and the 1960s. Featuring some 85 colour illustrations, Bygone London is a further exploration of a changing city. Alongside photographs of the long-departed trams and trolleybuses are rare colour images portraying the Festival of Britain in 1951 and other facets of Metropolitan life during these years.

This new compilation, illustrated almost exclusively with unpublished archive colour material, accompanied by detailed captions, will appeal to Londoners, visitors to the capital and transport enthusiasts.
