A significant number of branch lines were inherited by the Southern Railway at the Grouping in 1923. Located across the system, from the West Country to Kent, to provide cost-effective services over these lines, the SR used pull-push (the SR used this term whereas elsewhere the words were usually reversed) sets which had a driving cab at one end of a rake of coaches.
These coaches, either converted from older rolling stock or built specially, were to be an essential part of the operation of the SR’s branches right through to Nationalisation and beyond; indeed many lines were still using such stock up to closure. In this book, one of the country’s foremost experts on the subject of SR rolling stock, Mike King, explores the great variety of Southern Railway/Region pull-push stock. Comprehensively illustrated with both photographs and 4mm scale drawings, the book is destined to become the definitive guide for all Southern Railway modellers and historians on this interesting subject on which little has been previously published.
