Another classic OPC reference title is being reprinted to meet continuing demand. Although the Southern Railway inherited a vast stock of coaches and vans from its three main constituent companies in 1923, it soon started to develop its own range of coaching stock for both its steam hauled and electric services. Many new types of coaches were introduced under the auspices of Maunsell and Bulleid. Numerous examples of these remained in service well into the BR era. Indeed, many of the non-passenger vans built by the SR before 1948 continued to be seen throughout the BR network until the early 1990s and some remain visible in sidings in the 21st century, more than 50 years after they were constructed.
Railway modellers and those taking a serious interest in the history and operations of the Southern Railway and the Southern Region of BR will find this book an invaluable addition to their reference libraries. Incorporating more than 80 4mm scale drawings, along with detailed tabular material and some 200 mono photographs, this has been by far the most detailed reference book yet published on the subject.
