One popular feature of the Ian Allan Publishing list over the last few years has been the re-issuing of some of the company’s locospotting books from years gone by. As well as books dealing with the locomotives found on the various regions of BR, there was always particular interest in the Combined volumes, which listed all the locomotives in service across the network at the date of publication. This latest reprint from the Ian Allan archives lists all the locomotives in traffic, or on order, in the Spring of 1963. This is a particularly interesting period as steam locos were by then rapidly succumbing to modern traction in the form of diesel and electric locomotives and multiple units. The locomotive lists for this year make for fascinating reading. There were still pre-grouping locomotives in service, some dating back to the late nineteenth century. Beside these relics were the latest products of the Modernisation Plan of the 1950s. In addition to providing details of all the locomotives, which were in service, many of the classes featured, are illustrated. All in all, this is a feast of nostalgia for former and recidivist trainspotters who recall this era.
