Over the years Ian Allan Publishing has had considerable success with reprinting the classic Combined Volume ‘abc’ titles from the halcyon days of Britain’s railways. For 2008, the combined volume for 1954 is being reissued. By this date, Britain’s railways had been Nationalised for six years and many of the relatively small and aged classes inherited from the ‘Big Four’ companies were rapidly disappearing as both BR Standard steam locomotives were constructed and large numbers of diesel and electric multiple-units were being introduced.
Perfect for all those who were youthful trainspotters during these years and who are now looking back on their childhood and adolescence with nostalgia. For a broader audience, however, the books represent an excellent source of reference material, providing as they do a snapshot of the locomotives operating on Britain’s railways at a given moment in time. As such they are useful guides for railway modellers in particular, giving vital information essential in the recreation of the railway network as it existed at the time.
